The Sweet Fern Shrub (Comptonia peregrina) is a deciduous shrub that grows small and upright, forming a mound of shiny olive green leaves. This plant is very notable due to its attractive foliage and extremely aromatic scent. Yellow green flowers appear in late spring and early summer, giving way to greenish brown seed capsules. This plant is native to North America and attracts pollinating wildlife, but it generally considered to be deer resistant. 

Prefers full sun to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of soil types and conditions, including sand, gravel, acidic, moist, dry and even poor.
