The 'Issai' Hardy Kiwi Vine (Actinidia arguta 'Isaai') produces fruit that is the close cousin of the familiar grocery store kiwi. The berries have the same sweet-and-citrus taste, maybe a little sweeter, but they're bite-sized and smooth skinned so you can pop them in your mouth like grapes. The 'Issai' Kiwi is self pollinating and will not need another plant nearby in order to produce fruit, although, as with any fruit tree, multiples will ensure a larger yield. This plant will require frequent pruning and strong support, as the vines are very large and heavy and can bear about 100 pounds of berries per year. The plant will produce beautiful clusters of white flowers in the summer time and give way to ripened fruits in late August. The vines smell very similar to catnip, so cats will take a liking to the plant and will possibly damage the foliage or dig at the roots.
